STATEMENT
The beauty of the New Mexico environment where I live has proven to be a great inspiration in my work. In 2005, I retired from academia and moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico where I presently maintain a studio with my wife, Deborah, who is an accomplished watercolorist.
I paint almost every day and my art can be seen as, “A byproduct of daily existence.” The challenge, I believe is: “To paint ideas, not things. If I do it right, it will convey another form of truth.”
My art history background and observing the great art in museums in Europe and the US has greatly influenced me. After a successful period of Abstract Expressionist compositions and awards I started exploring figurative themes based on Western and Native American motifs.
I make ink drawings of my ideas and these are loosely transferred to a canvas. I add layers of color in traditional glazing and scumbling techniques. I work primarily in oil but occasionally I use acrylic based paints. It depends on the subject,
My paintings are based on traditional compositions and a hint of tectonic forms will emerge reflecting my background in architecture design. I'm excited about the atmospheric richness of color created by layering of paint.
Over my career, I have won many regional and national art awards and had several solo shows. I have been affiliated with art galleries in New Mexico, California, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri and Texas. My paintings are in museums, numerous private and public collections in the US, Italy, Germany, England, and Australia.

BIOGRAPHY
Joe’s style has evolved over his art career. Experiences in the changing landscape of places and events, political and social issues have shaped his art statements. His abstracts are based on his love of the earth, the sky, an awareness of atmospheric conditions, and the passing of time that may be seen as a metaphysical statement. The beauty of the environment and the history of the American Southwest has been an inspiration in Joe’s painting.
In 2005, he moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico where he presently maintains a studio with his wife, Deborah, who is an accomplished watercolorist. Joe paints almost every day and his art can be seen as, “A byproduct of daily existence.” The challenge, he believes, is: “To paint ideas, not things. If I do it right, it will convey another form of truth.” .
Over his career, Joe has won many regional and national art awards and he has had several solo shows. He has been affiliated with art galleries throughout California, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri and Texas. His work is in museums, numerous private and public collections in the US, Italy, Germany, England, and Australia.
Joe’s art started as a young boy growing up on a Colorado ranch. Drawing came naturally and was an important part of his one-room school educational experience. Following graduation from Salida (CO) High School, he joined the Marine Corps and served in the latter part of the Korean War and the early Cold War. He returned to the University of Denver and earned a BFA in Painting with a certificate for Secondary Education under the GI Bill, and later, with a scholarship, a Master of Arts in Art History with emphasis in Modern and American Art and Architecture.
His forty-five year teaching career in the visual arts and in architecture began in 1960 in the California public schools where he hoped to make a difference with disadvantaged youths. After obtaining an MA in Art History, he taught and directed college art programs in Colorado, Kansas and Texas. Joe retired from the College of Architecture at Texas A&M University in 2005 where he taught art and architectural history, design, painting, and drawing for thirty one years, including seven semesters in Florence, Italy and one summer in London, UK.. He retired with the title of Professor Emeritus.
He has won many art awards , purchase prizes and several teaching honors, including the George H. W. Bush International Excellence in Teaching Award, The Texas A&M University Master Teacher and Outstanding Young Man of America.
Currently, Joe concentrates on juried shows and solo exhibitions. In 2015, he was invited to have a solo exhibition at Texas A&M University where he hung 18 oils.
